Title of the Role: National Residential Weekend Role Model
Criteria:
Member of 1Voice.
Skilled AAC user. See skills section below.
Over 16 years or age.
Actively participated in a 1Voice event (online or in person) in the last 2 years.
You must be able to attend the residential weekend from 3pm Friday 21 August until 3pm Sunday 23 August 2026.
Purpose of the role:
Give encouragement and support to the younger/less experienced AAC users.
Build confidence and self-esteem in younger/less experienced AAC users.
Support families/carers to have a positive understanding of the potential that a person who uses AAC can have.
Help raise aspirations of young people to use AAC and their supporters.
Encouraging the younger/less experienced AAC user in making full use of the AAC resources available to them.
Support others to understand how to interact confidently and effectively with AAC users.
Key Tasks at National Residential Weekend COULD include:
Be available to welcome families as they arrive and show families to their rooms and around the site.
Support and encourage families in their use of high and low-tech AAC.
Participate in structured activities and free time sessions, supporting children using AAC and speaking children, as well as parents and carers.
Promote all forms of communication, particularly encouraging the use of AAC.
Run or provide supporting role in structured activities.
Give a presentation or run a workshop (To AAC users and/or families).
Role Models are representatives of 1Voice at all times during the weekend, even during non-structured activities.
These key tasks are all team jobs along with other volunteers and role models. Role models are not expected to be able to do all tasks independently but to work together, each playing to their own strengths.
Suggested Skills:
Comfortable to talk to others about your AAC journey.
Confident and comfortable speaking publicly and to families and younger AAC users.
Sensitive and supportive communicator.
Knowledge of the work and ethos of the charity.
Able to motivate people and promote effective working relationships.
Ability to listen and involve others in a group, avoiding a dominant role.
To be a team player and follow the organiser’s lead.
Help available:
Travel expenses, when discussed and agreed in advance, will be paid when invited to attend the National Residential Weekend.
Accommodation at the National Residential Weekend venue is included (Treloar’s College) with all meals.
Accommodation and meals for up to 2 PA/carer places is included (Unfortunately we can’t pay PA/Carer salary).
Other expenses can be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
