The Mere Oaks School Summer AAC groups in Wigan confirmed the need for people to be able to get together from all over the UK, and in November 2000, 1 Voice held it's first Family Weekend Conference (see Events for feedback). Feedback from this stressed the importance of children being able to meet, not only peers, but adults using AAC. These adult role-models allowed the children to see the possibilities of AAC and inspired them to keep going in the difficult task of learning an AAC system. Our first newsletter was distributed in January 2001 to help families keep in touch, and the newsletter is now distributed twice yearly.

1 Voice became a registered charity in July 2001 and we held our second residential weekend conference, with a Harry Potter theme, in November 2001. Since then we have held an annual family weekend.

1 Voice is run by a committee of parents, adults who use AAC , and professionals. Volunteers are responsible for organising and running events, as well as for all administration, policy making, fundraising, publicity and all other duties! As 1 Voice grows, we will need to appoint paid workers to cover the anticipated workload.
